Saybrook Special

Historic Ride

Since The Valley Railroad Company was chartered in 1969, nearly every piece of preserved railroad equipment in its museum collection – including steam and diesel locomotives, passenger cars, and work equipment – has arrived at Essex Station from Old Saybrook, our rail connection to the “outside world.” Now, the historic 4-mile stretch of rail south of Essex Station to Old Saybrook is available for passenger travel aboard the Saybrook Special!

Into the Woods We Go!

On the first weekend of each month from June through October, passengers may board the 10:00 a.m. Saybrook Special for a unique journey along the railroad from Essex to Old Saybrook.  The train passes through unspoiled forestland, glacial pathways, rocky ridgelines, and alongside “The Preserve,” the largest remaining inland coastal forest between Boston and New York. Narration highlights include the natural landscape, the history of the former railroad stations in Saybrook Point and Fenwick, and anecdotes from earlier freight days on the line.

The Saybrook Special is offered at NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE to ticket holders for the 11:00 a.m. train or train/boat excursion.
